  PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

“Language skills are the foundation of success for newcomers". The Specialized Language Training (SLT) Programs offer newcomers the opportunity to strengthen their language skills so they can land jobs that reflect their qualifications or function more effectively in jobs they currently hold.

ESL for Accounting and Healthcare professionals and Communications for Engineers are designed for individuals with backgrounds in these sectors. The Language Training at Work (LTW) is for companies or organizations with employees whose first languageis not English.

Accounting Professionals
  • ESL for Accounting Professionals is a specialized langu age training program; not a credit course.
  • This program is designed for internationally-educated professionals in accounting, finance or business administration.
  • Training covers 50 hours over a ten-week period to improve speaking, listening, writing and reading area skills.
  • Participants will also learn job-specific terminology, licensing and accreditation, and local market job opportunities.
  • Orientation sessions by Certified General Accountants (CGA) and workshops are available during training.
  • Training is available on Saturdays or weekdays
  • Schools are located in Richmond Hill and Markham
  • Upon completion of training , participants are eligible for a one- on -one meeting with a career counsellor  to discuss short/long term goals, career exploration, employment and volunteering opportunities
Communications for Engineers
  • This program is designed for internationally-educated professionals in engineering field with the verbal and written English language proficiency needed to work and ex pand further on their careers.
  • Training covers 50 hours of instruction over a ten-week period to improve speaking, listening, writing and reading area skills.
  • Participants will also learn job-specific vocabulary, licensing and accreditation, and local market job opportunities.
  • Orientation sessions by Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) and workshops are available during training.
  • Communications for Engineers is a specialized language training program; not a credit course.
  • Training is available on Saturdays or weekdays
  • Schools are located in Richmond Hill and Markham
Healthcare Professionals
  • This program is designed for internationally-trained professionals in health
  • Training covers 50 hours of instruction over a t en-week period to improve speaking, listening, writing and reading area skills.
  • Participants will also learn job-specific vocabulary, licensing and accreditation, and local market job opportunities.
  • Orientation sessions and workshops are available during training.
  • ESL for Health Care Professionals is a specialized language training program; not a credit course.
  • Classes are offered on Saturdays or weekdays
  • Schools are located in Richmond Hill and Markham

  • This program is for companies in the York, GTA and Peel regions with ESL population in need of language training.
  • Program provides training for workers in construction, manufacturing and customer service to improve area skills.
  • Training covers 40 hours of instruction job-specific vocabulary.
  • Curriculum is tailor-made to address the needs of workers and the participaning company
  • Training may take place at the worksite taking into consideration workers' shifts.

 
  PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Initial and exit assessments free of charge
  • A three month follow up
 
  PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

  • Canadian Citizens, Landed Immigrants (Permanent Residents), Convention Refugees, Refugee Claimants, Temporary Foreign Worker admitted under the Live-In Caregiver Program
  • Proof of immigration status
  • Residents of York, Peel/GTA regions
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT)
  • Background in accounting or finance , healthcare and engineering
  • Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLBs) 5 to 7: minimum of 6 in any skill area (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
